Gray torture

Original in the cemetery chapel

The Graue Marter is the most famous wayside shrine in Mainfranken . It is also considered the most important wayside shrine from the late Gothic period and is now located in Sommerach in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen . For a long time the stick was in the district of Gerlachshausen .

history

The torture was donated in 1511 by Heinrich Zorn to a mayor of Gerlachshausen. This is evidenced by an inscription on the wayside shrine. "Anno dni MCCCCCXI the tuesday after saint marx day the honorable Heinrich Zorn Schultß died in Gerlachshausen the god." The work can be assigned to the master of the Dettelbacher tympanum. The exact name is not known, but it came from the environment of Tilman Riemenschneider . A renovation in 1607 is also noted on the stone. “Renovated by hans Melchior Wittich v. Wormbs zu Sommerach Anno 1607 ”.

A replica of the almost four-meter-high wayside shrine stands on the KT 29 district road between Gerlachshausen and Sommerach in the Sommerach district. The original was brought to the cemetery chapel in Sommerach and is thus protected from wind and weather. The Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments runs the Marter under the number D-6-75-169-70.

description

The wayside shrine is square and comes from the late Gothic period . The shaft and the cube-shaped attachment show illustrations. The top ends in the form of a Franconian farmhouse with a hipped roof .

The basis of the wayside shrine is the representation of the Zorn couple in a kneeling position. Above them is the above-mentioned inscription in the form of a banner. Above it is the group of figures of Anna Selbdritt . She is a symbol of protective motherhood. In the middle sits Anna , the Mary and the infant Jesus holding onto her knees. Two angels surround the scene and raise a veil.

In the representations on the top, the passion of Christ is shown. The north side shows Jesus in the midst of his torturers, he carries his cross and is already on the way to Golgotha . In the west, Jesus collapsed under the weight of the cross. Simon of Cyrene therefore helps him carry it, while in the background Veronica hands her sweatcloth. The southern depiction shows Jesus sitting on the cross. An executioner is guarding him. The gable end of the torture ends with the crucifixion of Jesus. Johannes and Maria flank the scene. A naked boy is picking a grape underneath.
