Building description and history

The Mühlberg cemetery chapel is a flat-roofed hall building made of field and brick built in the 16th century with a three-sided east end. In the west, an octagonal roof turret with a tail hood was added . There is also a pointed arched portal here. A stretcher house was added south of the building in 1862. The chapel was also restored in the same year.

Inside the chapel there is a west gallery with a keel decor. The wooden polygonal pulpit is of construction-time origin. The historical inventory of the building includes an altarpiece from the 17th century, which was donated in 1614 by Mühlberg's mayor Christoph Ottenbach and his wife Ursula. It is a painted shrine in simple Renaissance shapes, which is equipped with two movable and two fixed wings. The portraits of the two donors are on either side of the predella of the altar. A restoration of this work of art took place after a visit by the architectural monuments commission of the province of Saxony in 1926. For this purpose, the work of art was specially sent to Halle (Saale) and renewed in his workshop under the supervision of the painter Leusch. Another restoration finally took place in 1966.

On the southern outer wall of the chapel there is an epitaph with two donor figures and an inscription from 1598, which was originally located in the cemetery wall.
