Friedrich Erhard Wagner (also Wagener, * 1759 in Koethen , † 1813 in Berlin ) was a German portrait painter.

From 1777 Wagner studied at the Berlin Art Academy under Johann Heinrich Meil. After completing his studies, he moved to Dresden in 1788 , where he was able to continue studying with Giovanni Battista Casanova thanks to a scholarship from the Duke of Köthen .

Daniel Chodowiecki praised the young artist in a letter to the Countess von Solms-Laubach and predicted a successful future for him. In 1807 Wagner left Dresden and went back to Berlin.

He mostly painted in pastel and only rarely portraits in oil, which were often used as models for engravers. He also copied portraits of old masters. Most of the portraits painted by Wagner have only survived as copperplate copies.
