Friedrich Gottlieb Becker

Friedrich Gottlieb Becker (born November 9, 1792 in Gotha ; † July 24, 1865 there ) was a German publisher and politician.

Life

Becker was the second son of the publisher Rudolf Zacharias Becker . After graduating from school, he studied philology and history in Leipzig and Göttingen from 1810 to 1813 . In 1812 he campaigned for the father, who had been captured by the French, to be released. In 1813 he fought as a soldier in the Wars of Liberation . He then joined his father's publishing house in Gotha in 1814 and also worked in the editorial offices of the newspapers he founded.

In 1822 he took over the family business. In 1830 he merged the two newspapers Nationalzeitung der Deutschen and Allgemeine Anzeiger der Deutschen to form the Allgemeine Anzeiger and Nationalzeitung der Deutschen . Since 1849 the title was Reichsanzeiger der Deutschen . The sheet had to be discontinued in 1850.

In spiritual terms he was a mediator between the Enlightenment , which his father still embodied, and early liberalism . He took part in keeping the memory of Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi alive. He also got involved in local school and community affairs. In 1841 he was appointed councilor. From 1845 to 1860 he was also director of the Gothaerer fire insurance company.

Becker represented the Duchy of Saxony-Gotha in the Frankfurt National Assembly in 1848/1849 . He belonged to the casino group. Becker was a member of the Economic Committee. Among other things, he advocated a separation of church and state in parliament. He also took part in the debate on uniform trade regulations and was one of the authors of an alternative proposal.

After the revolution he took part in the Gotha post-parliament . From 1850 he was a city councilor in Gotha. Becker was President of the Landtag of Gotha from 1850 to 1857 . The University of Jena awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1850. He was appointed senator in 1853 and was head of the guild hall from 1855.
