Friedrich Funke was the eldest son of the industrialist Friedrich Funke (1821-1884). However, it was mostly his brother Carl who successfully continued the family's entrepreneurial legacy.

After attending the Humboldt School in Essen with an upper secondary school leaving certificate in 1870, he studied metallurgy at the Aachen Polytechnic .

On November 22nd, 1872 he was one of the founders of the Academic Association of Chemists and Metallurgists at the Polytechnic School in Aachen , later the Corps Montania Aachen. After completing his studies, he initially worked as a metallurgical engineer. In 1898 he was one of the founders of the Rheinisch-Westfälische Elektrizitätswerk .

After the death of his younger brother Carl in 1912, he took on important management positions in his family's companies. In 1915 he became chairman of the supervisory board of the King Wilhelm mining association in Borbeck . From 1916 to 1919 he was chairman of the board of the Actien beer brewery in Essen an der Ruhr , later the Stern brewery , in which his father held this position for 22 years.

In memory of his brother Wilhelm (1857–1903), who died early, Funke founded the non-denominational Friedrich and Wilhelm Funke Foundation in 1912, which opened the forest recreation facility designed by the Essen architect Albert Erbe on May 2, 1914 in the Bredeney district of Essen school-age children from poor families in Essen. After the Second World War , the forest recreation site was converted into an orphanage in 1953, whereby the purpose of the foundation changed from recreation to the constant care of children and young people from 7 to 18 years of age and their upbringing to lead an independent life . The Friedrich-und-Wilhelm-Funke-Stiftung still exists today, which runs a children's and youth home.

Friedrich Funke was buried in the family crypt of the Funke and Schürenberg families at the cemetery at Kettwiger Tor . After its closure in 1955, the common crypt was moved to the Ostfriedhof Essen .
