Friedrich Hopf (Mayor)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ernst Lebrecht Friedrich Hopf (born February 20, 1834 in Delitzsch ; † April 13, 1912 in Schweinfurt ) was second mayor of Arnstadt in the Principality of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen from 1871 to 1907 .

family

Hopf was married to Marie Therese geb. Martin (1827-1874). The couple had three children: a daughter, Emilie Margarethe Helene married Rosa, who moved to Schweinfurt; a daughter Anna (* 1859 in Sondershausen ); a son Friedrich Eduard Günther (1861–1936). The family apparently initially lived in Sondershausen and moved to Arnstadt in October 1860. It was first found in the Arnstadt address books in 1867. In April 1907, Hopf moved to Schweinfurt with their daughter Anna.

Life

Until October 1871, Hopf worked as a registrar and secretary in the city administration of Arnstadt. In addition, from 1871 (at the latest) he also worked as an agent for the “Life Insurance Company in Leipzig”. After the term of office of the second mayor Adolph Kehl (1805-1875) had expired without his re-election, the position was advertised in September 1871 by Julius Hülsemann as the deputy of the sick mayor Friedrich Emmerling . Hopf applied successfully, the city council elected him as the new (second) mayor, and he was sworn in at the end of November for 12 years. Hülsemann was installed as the successor to Emmerling at the end of the year. After his death in March 1888, Georg Trautvetter became first mayor in early 1889. He was followed by Harald Bielfeld in March 1894 . During these years, Hopf's service period was extended twice. He retired on April 1, 1907.

During Hopf's tenure - beginning shortly after the establishment of the Reich in 1871 - the growing workforce was subjected to severe repression due to state laws and, from October 1878, due to the 'Socialist Law' . The Princely District Administrator urged that the city authorities - the police and the mayors - interpret their mandate extensively and carry it out consistently. So Hopf had to z. B. watch the course of meetings and u. U. cancel with police support. The district administrator has repeatedly criticized that “the magistrate in question has mostly not shown himself to be sufficiently up to the task”.

Overall, the duties of the second mayor were varied; The scope and focus changed over the decades. Around 1900 Hopf was z. B. Deputy in the registry office, head of the calibration office, head of the gas and water works committee (later also responsible for the electricity works), head of the slaughterhouse management committee, chairman of the poor committee.

Hopf compiled the address book in 1891, which first indicated the numbering of houses per street introduced in 1890. In addition, the previous building numbering was recorded, which was based on the original cadastral numbers.

Hopf was appointed to the council in August 1899. In May 1904 he received the Schwarzburg Cross of Honor III. Class.
