Friedrich Kettler was born the son of Duke Gotthard and his wife Anna von Mecklenburg-Güstrow . He was married to Elisabeth Magdalena von Pommern , the daughter of Ernst Ludwig von Pommern-Wolgast . After the death of his father he ruled for his minor brother Wilhelm until 1595 . By the Treaty of Hofzumberge of May 21, 1596, the brothers divided the rule, the lower jurisdiction and the court holding, namely in a Courland area of rule in the west for Wilhelm with Goldingen as the residence city and a Semgallic area of rule in the east for Friedrich with Mitau as the residence city.
