Friedrich Müller (rock scientist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friedrich Müller (born July 3, 1923 in Wunsiedel ; † December 19, 2003 in Marktredwitz ) was a teacher, rector of the then Jean-Paul secondary school in Wunsiedel and a lecturer at the State College for Stone Processing in Wunsiedel. He built up one of the world's largest natural stone collections. The Upper Franconian Chamber of Commerce and Industry appointed him an expert for natural stone . He has received several awards for his achievements and his voluntary work.

engagement

Müller's great merit is that he founded the natural stone archive in Wunsiedel. He drew on a collection of samples that had already been created in the 1950s. He realized that in addition to historical and domestic rocks, imported rocks should also be archived and specialist information collected about them. He maintained contacts with mining and processing companies at home and abroad and visited national and international trade fairs. He used these contacts to expand this collection into one of the largest natural stone collections in the world. As a further credit, Müllers is credited with making it clear to the German-speaking natural stone industry that the stones should be given a scientifically correct name.

For Friedrich Müller, this natural stone archive formed the basis for the publication of the International Natural Stone Index (INSK), which now comprises more than 10 volumes and is continuously updated. There is also the natural stone archive with all the essential data as an online version, which is not only continuously updated, but can also be accessed on the Internet without registration and costs.

In addition to specialist books, Müller published numerous specialist articles in the journal Naturstein and gave specialist lectures on natural stone to guilds in the stonemasonry trade . He set up the natural stone archive in the stone processing school. In more than 5000 different samples (24 × 15 × 2 cm), the most important historical and current building and sculptural stones of the German-speaking area as well as almost all currently traded natural stone from numerous countries are exhibited. Furthermore, in the building of the natural stone archive there is a systematic petrographic handpiece collection with 4000 specimens and a mineral collection of around 1500 levels.

Others

Friedrich Müller arranged the mineralogical-geological collection in the Fichtelgebirgsmuseum Wunsiedel, supplemented and expanded it. Because of his expertise, he was referred to in the stone industry as the "stone pope".
