Friedrich Sass (born January 6, 1883 in Koldenbüttel , Schleswig, † February 26, 1968 in West Berlin ) was a German mechanical engineer.

Life

Sass attended high school in Schleswig and studied mechanical engineering and marine engineering at the technical universities in Munich and Berlin . He completed the main diploma examination as well as his doctorate 15 years later with "distinction".

Joined AEG in 1908 , Sass initially had to deal with the design of the then still young steam turbine . During the First World War , after a short period in the Navy, he worked again for AEG and headed the diesel engine construction department for submarines. Under his leadership, the large, double-acting two - stroke engine with compressorless injection was developed and made ready for operation. In 1928 the first ships with engines of this type started up and proved their worth.

He worked from 1935 to 1952 as a board member at Germanischer Lloyd . During this time, diesel-electric and turbo-electric systems as well as high-pressure hot steam for ship technology were developed. On September 30, 1952, Sass left Germanischer Lloyd, which moved its headquarters from Berlin to Hamburg. Sass now devoted himself to teaching in the broadest sense. As early as 1927 he had given lectures on compressorless diesel engines at the Technical University of Berlin as an associate professor. From 1946 to March 31, 1953, he held the chair for the design of diesel engines at the Technical University of Berlin . For a total of 26 years, he had imparted knowledge of the design principles of the diesel engine to many generations of students.

Among the many other awards he has been given, the main one is the award of a Dr.-Ing. E. h. by the Technical University of Karlsruhe, the award of the Golden Badge of Honor by the Shipbuilding Society and the appointment as honorary senator by the Technical University of Berlin.
