Friedrich Sorge (born April 10, 1885 in Wasungen , † April 27, 1945 in Bad Hersfeld ) was a lawyer and 1st Mayor of Meiningen .

After his childhood in Wasungen Friedrich worry studied in Erlangen economy and in Jena jurisprudence . During his studies he became a member of the Association of German Students Erlangen . From 1914 to 1918 he took part in the First World War. In 1919 he became city treasurer in Meiningen and was able to fill the position of second mayor in 1921. In 1941 Friedrich Sorge was elected first mayor.

At the end of the Second World War, Friedrich Sorge contributed a great deal to the almost intact handover of the city of Meiningen to the Americans. At the beginning of April 1945 Meiningen was bypassed and encircled north and south by US units of the 11th Panzer Division under Colonel Virgil Bell, coming from the Fulda area. On April 5, 1945, tank units began to take Meiningen from the east, with fighting between Hungarian-German and American units on the eastern outskirts, which resulted in death and destruction. In order to prevent the city from being destroyed, Friedrich Sorge formed an advisory team, including the later mayor Werner Heinrich Hacht , who had white flags raised on the towers of the city church and prepared for the city's surrender . The fighting ended and when the first American tanks reached the market, Friedrich Sorge handed over the city there with a delegation to Colonel Bell.

Friedrich Sorge was arrested on April 9, 1945 and taken to the internment camp in Obersuhl ( Hesse ). Shortly afterwards he died on April 27, 1945 in Bad Hersfeld.
