Friedrich Wilhelm Graf von Lepel (born April 25, 1774 in Fürstenwalde / Spree , † January 9, 1840 in Rome ) was a Prussian major general and adjutant to Prince Heinrich of Prussia .

family

His parents came from the Pomeranian noble family von Lepel , but formed a branch of their own through the settlement of their father as a forestry council in Fürstenwalde. Friedrich Wilhelm von Lepel was married to Isabella Charlotte Ulrike von Blumenthal (1778–1826) for the first time in 1810 and his second marriage to the Englishwoman Fanny Agnew (1799–1852) from 1833. Both marriages remained childless. He had four siblings - Dietrich (1767–1815), Catharina (1769–1833), Wilhelmine (1781–1795) and Adolph (1783–1847).

Education and career

Wilhelm began his military career in 1787 as a private corporal in the Fusilier Battalion 1 of Legat (No. 20). He was then in the First Coalition War against France as a second lieutenant and as a major in Napoleon's Russian campaign in 1812 in the Prussian auxiliaries. As the commander of four squadrons in the victorious battles off Riga , he received the Order of Pour le Mérite on September 4, 1812 and the Cross of the Legion of Honor from Napoleon . In 1813 he became a wing adjutant to Prince Heinrich of Prussia (1781–1846), the younger brother of King Friedrich Wilhelm III. (1770-1840). With him he undertook the change of front against Napoleon, fought in the Battle of Nations near Leipzig and came to Paris. In 1816 von Lepel went permanently to Rome in Italy as adjutant and companion of the unmarried prince until his death. On his 50th service anniversary he was by King Friedrich Wilhelm III. on March 16, 1838 raised to the Prussian count status.
