Friesengeist

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friesengeist is a herbal liqueur with 56 percent alcohol by volume, the recipe of which was developed by Johann Eschen, at that time founder and owner of the Hotel Friesenhof in Wiesmoor in East Friesland , in 1957. In 2011 around a million bottles of Friesengeist were sold. The brand rights now belong to the spirits manufacturer Behn .

Name and story

According to Johann Eschen's own statements, an old keg filled with black-distilled schnapps was found in the bog while cutting peat in 1951 . Eschen drank it and was so convinced of the taste that he tried to imitate the recipe. He discovered that the "taste came from the local herbs". In August 1957, after much experimentation, he finally achieved his breakthrough. He initially named the drink after his hotel and served it exclusively in his hotel under the name Geist vom Friesenhof . In 1961 he gave the hotel and the liquor the name Friesengeist , which is still used today, and began promoting the drink at exhibitions. A little later he distributed the drink throughout the Federal Republic, Denmark, Sweden, France, Argentina and the Netherlands.

His descendants sold the trademark rights to the spirits manufacturer Behn in 1999. In Wiesmoor, a museum is now dedicated to the drink, which Karlheinz Eschen, son of Johann Eschen and owner of the hotel since 1984, opened on the 50th anniversary of the invention on November 11, 2011. It was created with the support of the spirits manufacturer Behn.
