Fritz Fey (born March 14, 1940 in Lübeck ) is a German cameraman. He founded the Theater Figure Museum in Lübeck .

Life

Fritz Fey comes from a family of puppeteers. His father, Fritz Fey senior, had opened a puppet theater in 1977 in an old Lübeck merchant's house. He died in 1986. His wife Ingeborg continued to run the theater until she was 82 years old in 2007, before she retired.

Fritz Fey junior, born in the war in 1940, attended elementary school, then worked on a farm and trained as a gardener. This was followed by training as a cameraman with the North German Broadcasting Corporation . On his business trips he collected around 25,000 exhibits , including marionettes, stick puppets, postcards, stage sets, shadow puppets, music boxes, barrel organs, even entire theater stages and carriages.

In 1982 he was given the chance to initially exhibit a small part of his collection. The city of Lübeck and a number of sponsors made it possible to found a museum in an old merchant's house in Kolk in the old town. The most important co-founder and collaborator was the former Indian classical dancer Saraswathi, who Fritz Fey had met on her trip to Europe and who soon shared his passion for theater characters. They married in 1991.

The theater figure museum moved to five houses in the old town near the Holsten Gate and was soon an attraction in every Lübeck travel guide. But rising rents and dwindling visitor numbers made it necessary to convert the museum into a GmbH in 2006 . It is being continued today by the Possehl Foundation .

Fritz and Saraswathi Fey have officially retired in Papenhusen .
