Fritz Flemming

Fritz Flemming (born March 9, 1873 in Braunschweig ; † 1947 ) was a German oboist .

Life

Fritz Flemming studied oboe in Paris with Georges Gillet . In 1897 he was appointed solo oboist with the Royal Opera Orchestra in Berlin . Richard Strauss worked closely with Flemming in his role as royal Prussian court conductor. Strauss was a fan of the French oboe and often took the oboist with him when he conducted other orchestras. Flemming was a member of the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra for a time. Flemming married Richard Strauss's niece, which sealed the close relationship.

In 1907 the Berlin Academy of Music appointed him professor. His students included u. a. Willi Gerlach and Josef Tal .

Flemming's particular merit is the introduction of the French oboe in Germany. Because of his influence, many German oboists followed his example in the 1920s.
