Fritz Gustav Waack (born September 28, 1909 in Bielefeld , † March 25, 1989 in Berlin ) was a German engineer and pioneer of stereo photography .

life and work

Fritz Waack spent his childhood in Bielefeld , but, after the early death of his mother, spent his youth in Baden-Baden . Due to family reasons, he left high school shortly before graduation.

Since October 1, 1927, he lived in Berlin, where he completed an apprenticeship as a precision mechanic and attended evening school. In 1931 he was one of the founding members of the Mariendorfer Hockey Club . After being unemployed for economic reasons, he got a job at the Askania works in Berlin-Friedenau in the area of gyro technology (especially for the air force) in 1934 as part of the German rearmament . Waack was involved in several company patents and had an engineer-like position (member of VDI ). Because of his work in arms production, he was indispensable, but was still used as a soldier from February to April 1945.

After 1945 Waack continued to work as an engineer at the Askania works. Due to in-house restructuring, caused by the economic crisis in armaments production after the end of the Korean War , he worked in controller construction for power plants from 1953. As part of these tasks, he was also deployed on several assembly jobs abroad. In 1973 he retired from working life.

Fritz G. Waack was enthusiastic about photography from his youth. In the immediate post-war period he ran a photo portrait studio in the English officers' club NAAFI in Berlin until around 1950 . The preoccupation with stereophotography was probably due to the fact that the Askania-Werke also built stereoscopic cameras.

Waack successfully participated in numerous competitions, including international ones (award as Artiste de la Fédération Internationale de l'Art Photographique - AFIAP). From 1974 he worked on the publication of the stereo journal of the German Society for Stereoscopy . In the latter, he was on the board of the Berlin regional association and also served on its national board, of which he was chairman from 1981 to 1984. Waack was also active as a member of the founding board of the International Stereoscopic Union (ISU). He has been made an honorary member of FIAP: HonAFIAP.
