Friedrich "Fritz" Köster (born September 12, 1911 in Hamborn ; † unknown) was a German football goalkeeper .

Career in football

Köster was born in 1911 in the Ruhr area town of Hamborn and in the 1939/40 season guarded the goal of the Westende Hamborn club , which played in the top division of the Gauliga Niederrhein at the time. Furthermore, the Hamborner played in the Tschammerpokal , the forerunner of the DFB Cup, and Köster made his debut on August 20, 1939 in a 3-2 win after extra time against VfR Mannheim in this competition. The team made it to the round of 16, but lost 2-0 to Hamburger SV . During the years of World War IIWestende took part in the cup competition two more times and reached the second round again in 1942. Köster played a total of nine cup matches. Basically, despite the war, he was able to continue playing football and thus became champion with Westende Niederrhein in 1943, although games were stopped in the last year of the war. On May 16, 1943 he was the goalkeeper of the Westende-Elf, which lost the game in the 2nd preliminary round of the German soccer championship 1942/43 with 1: 8 at VfR Mannheim .

The northern part of the city of Duisburg , to which Hamborn had belonged since 1929, was liberated in March 1945. Soon afterwards, despite the severe destruction, football was resumed and Köster ran again for Westende Hamborn in 1946/47. In 1947 a top division was introduced for the North Rhine-Westphalia area with the Oberliga West , which remained the first division until the Bundesliga was introduced in 1963. One of the 13 founding members was Westende's local rival Hamborn 07 , to which Köster moved in the run-up to the first league season in 1947/48. First he had to give way to Wilhelm Konstanscheck in the goalkeeping position before he made his league debut on November 23, 1947 in a 3-1 home win against Borussia Dortmund at the age of 36. With this win, Hamborn 07 temporarily moved to the top of the table. Köster took on the role of regular goalkeeper for the rest of the season and ultimately finished fourth with his team. In the following season 1948/49 he competed with the players Badzung and Röhrig for the place in the goal and was called up again and again during the season without being a permanent regular. After 25 contested top division matches for Hamborn 07, he left the club in the summer of 1949.
