Fritz Koref

Fritz Koref (born December 12, 1884 in Hanau ; † August 6, 1969 in Aarau ) was a physical chemist .

Life

His parents were Rabbi Markus Koref (* 1833 in Prague; † 1900) and his wife Recha, one of his brothers the lawyer Leo Koref (* 1876 in Rawitsch). The family registered on March 25, 1884 in the Hanau official apartment at Judengasse 56.

Fritz Koref was assistant to Walther Nernst . His colleagues included Niels Bjerrum and Frederick Alexander Lindemann . He took many measurements to confirm the specific heat laws of Nernst and Lindemann. He received a prize from the Elsa Neumann Foundation. In 1922 he bred more tungsten - single crystals . In 1930 he married the painter Gertrud Stemmler, b. Musculus , and moved to Berlin, where he was head of the Osram wire plant from 1932–1938 . With Richard Jacoby he discovered conditions under which the drawn tungsten wire acquires a relatively small crystalline structure when recrystallized, which is nevertheless dimensionally stable even at high temperatures. At about the same time as Frederick S. Goucher, he and Jacoby showed that it is possible to produce single crystals from drawn wires.

1938–1940 he worked at Fabriques Réunis de Lampes Éléctriques in Paris. Here he was interned several times, most recently with his wife for over a year in Camp de Gurs . They then lived in Lyon and escaped to Switzerland in early January 1943. He became a research associate at Wolframwerke Max Gloor and a consulting engineer at Glühlampenfabrik Gloria AG, Aarau. With Marcel Villat, Fritz Koref developed a process for the interior matting of incandescent lamps.
