Hubert Plaut

Hubert Curt Plaut (born January 31, 1889 in Leipzig , † January 18, 1978 in Banstead , Surrey, Great Britain) was a German-British mathematician.

Life

The son of the Jewish doctor Hugo Carl Plaut and Adele, b. Brach (* 1867 in Paris; † 1953 in Epsom, UK) attended the Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Hamburg and from 1909 studied mathematics, natural sciences and philosophy at the universities in Freiburg im Breisgau, Munich, Berlin, Göttingen, Freiburg and at the Albertus University of Königsberg , where, at the suggestion of Alfred Loewy, he received his doctorate on February 25, 1915 under Franz Meyer with his work On common divisors of n forms of a variable, of n linear homogeneous differential or difference expressions . In Göttingen he had joined the German Academic Freischar and the Jewish youth movement Blau Weiss in Hamburg. After doing military service on the Western Front and in Romania, he passed his academic teaching degree.

In August 1920 he became an employee of Osram GmbH in Berlin and head of the technical statistics department. Based on a publication by Karl Daeves , he began researching large numbers in the summer of 1923 . The aim of his work was to control and improve the quality of the manufactured products by subjecting all production data to statistical analysis. Together with Fritz Koref, he published a paper on the influence of fluctuations in the diameter or resistance of tungsten wire on the service life of incandescent lamps. In 1928/29 he gave lectures on manufacturing control based on statistical methods at the Technical University of Charlottenburg.

In 1933 he attended the first conference of the Industrial and Agricultural Section of the Royal Statistical Society in London , where he complained about the difficulties in introducing and developing methods of mathematical statistics in industry. On the other hand, he reported in the same year that statistical quality control had already been used in the steel, energy and mining industries as well as in food control.

In 1925 he married Ilse Hedwig Behrendt (* 1903 in Berlin; † 1994 in Banstead, Surrey), with whom he had three children. In 1936 he and his family had to emigrate to Great Britain due to his Jewish origins, where his family was naturalized in November 1947. He became a teacher in Banstead and lived from 1951 in neighboring Sutton .
