Fritz Zimmer (artist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fritz Zimmer (born November 9, 1874 in Stolberg / Büsbach , German Empire , † September 17, 1950 in Bad Wildungen , Federal Republic of Germany ) was a German artist. He mainly used watercolor and oil painting , chalk drawing and etching as techniques.

Life

Fritz Zimmer was trained at the Strasbourg Art School and attended the Leipzig Academy for four years. After that, he initially painted mainly in the area around Cologne. Only a few family-owned works have survived from this period.

In the German Empire he was drafted into military service and fought in the First World War on the Belgian western and later also the eastern front, where numerous works (mostly drawings and sketches) were created in the field.

After the war he took a teaching position at the Cologne art school and was appointed professor there. In his spare time he made excursions to paint in the surrounding area and the German Alps. Eventually he settled in Bad Wildungen, where the majority of his works were probably created. Here he married Hedwig Zimmer-Kätze.

He gained notoriety in and around Bad Wildungen, as clippings from local magazines show. Works of art in oil were created with motifs from the area. His etchings, also mostly in the area, were more widely used. Almost all copper plates were destroyed in the bombing raids of the Second World War on Dresden and Leipzig and only a few are still in family ownership.

Fritz Zimmer died in 1950 at the age of 75 and was buried in Bad Wildungen.

Zimmer has created an extensive life's work. This mainly consists of oil paintings, watercolors, etchings, chalk drawings, drawings and sketches.

Apart from numerous drawings and sketches, the family owns around 80 works; all other works are still in private hands today. Little is known about the precise whereabouts of the works, although some sales lists exist with the names of the buyers from the exhibitions.

Photos of all of his works do not exist, but there are numerous picture lists from exhibitions. The titles of the pictures, however, are often very similar, which obscures a distinction between works; the total number of his works can therefore not be known with certainty. Particularly in the case of the etchings, information on the edition is missing. There are only a few references to them, but it is not certain whether any later reprints were made.
