Froilán von León (* around 833 in Lugo , † around 905 in León ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman and bishop of León. He is a saint of the Catholic Church . He is mentioned in the Martyrologium Romanum .

Life

Froilán was a Benedictine monk. He lived for a while in a hermitage in Ruitelán in the El Bierzo region . Together with his companion Attila von Zamora and with the support of the Asturian King Alfons III. (ruled 866–910) he worked as a church reformer in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula . They founded u. a. the defunct monastery of Moreruela de Tábara . In 900 Froilán was ordained Bishop of León at the request of the citizens and by royal order . He was buried in the Cathedral of León .

Adoration

Several churches in northwest Spain and northern Portugal are dedicated to St. Consecrated to Froilán. He is revered as a benefactor of the poor; His relics , kept mainly in the cities of León and Lugo , are considered miraculous. He is the patron saint of the province of Lugo and the diocese of León . His feast day is October 3rd or 5th.

Medieval portraits of the saint are not known, but the bishop's statue on the trumea pillar of the south portal of the Cathedral of León is associated with him. He has been depicted in the bishop's robe since the baroque era .
