The frog spawn alga or common frog spawn alga ( Batrachospermum gelatinosum ) is a species of red algae from the order of the Batrachospermales . It lives in fresh water and is considered an indicator of clean water.

description

The bed is gray, gelatinous, slippery, fixed at the base and about 2 to 10 centimeters high. There is a central axis that runs through the entire alga and consists of long cylindrical cells arranged in a row. The axial cells have richly branched tufts of branches at the upper end. The tufts of branches stand like whorls, are densely packed and form dense whorls. This makes the alga look like a string of pearls. On the whorls there are short shoots of egg-shaped cells with ligamentous chloroplasts. The cells of the whorls are 5 to 15 micrometers wide.

The course of development is shown for the genus Batrachospermum .

Occurrence

Frog spawn algae ( Batrachospermum ) are the most common genus of the 150 or so red algae species found in freshwater around the world. Batrachospermum gelatinosum is widespread in Europe, Asia, North and South America, and Australia. It thrives in streams from the tundra to warmer regions of the temperate zone and tolerates water temperatures of around 1.5–20 ° C (in North America up to 27 ° C). In Central Europe it can be found from May to September as a floating, slushy mass in fast-flowing brooks, source brooks and below weirs and in clean lakes.

Systematics

The species was described by Carl von Linné in 1753 as Conferva gelatinosa . Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle placed it in the genus Batrachospermum , of which it is a type species . The genus includes over 90 species. There are numerous synonyms for this species .
