Frowin (Abbot)

Frowin (* before 1141; † March 27, 1178 in Engelberg ) was abbot of Engelberg Monastery from 1143/1147 to 1178 .

Life

Frowin was a monk in the monastery of St. Blasien in the Black Forest . From there he was sent to Engelberg Abbey as a reformer in 1143, where he was elected abbot there between 1143 and 1147. Engelberg Monastery, founded by Konrad von Seldenbüren , was occupied by monks from St. Blasien. After the death of the first abbot Adalhelm, in 1131, the monastery fell into disrepair. Under Frowin Engelberg attained the highest scientific and artistic importance, among other things he had a library built. As early as St. Blasien Frowin had the chronicles of Beda, Regino, Hermann, Bernold and Berthold summarized in one volume and had previously extracted annals from these works and the Einsiedler annals, combined them with his own notes and continued them in Engelberg from 1147. Forty manuscripts from Frowin's time have survived. He is venerated as a blessed.
