Football derbies in Argentina

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article looks at the main urban derbies in Argentina . The prerequisite for admission was that the two competing clubs were relatively often represented in the top division of Argentina . While five of the cities presented here ( Avellaneda , Córdoba , La Plata , Rosario and Santa Fe ) only describe the rivalry between the two most important clubs of the respective city, the city of many derbies ( Buenos Aires ) becomes everything in addition to that in Argentine football The outstanding rivalry between Boca and River also discussed that between San Lorenzo and Huracán , as both are among the most traditional clubs in the Argentine metropolis.

All other rivalries were not taken into account, such as the one between Vélez Sársfield and Nueva Chicago , which is the geographically closest city derby in Buenos Aires. The reason for not being taken into account is that Nueva Chicago has only been represented in the top division for six seasons so far and it is therefore a "derby of two unequal rivals". Each club listed below should only be mentioned once, namely in connection with its arch rival, which also forbade the presentation of other emotionally charged derbies, such as between Boca and San Lorenzo or Boca and Chacarita . Regarding the last-mentioned encounter, only the note that in the vicinity of this encounter there were recently sometimes more violent riots than, for example, in the classic Boca against River.

The chapters are sorted based on the alphabetical order of the cities included. Unless otherwise stated, the derby statistics are based on the reporting date July 31, 2009. Unless otherwise stated, the relevant sources are stored in the Spanish-language Wikipedia. However, it should generally be noted that statistics of this type should always be treated with caution, because it is not uncommon for them to differ depending on the source. Nevertheless, they give an overall impression of the sporting comparison of two teams vying for the public in the same region. The team that had a more successful derby record was always named first.

Avellaneda

The suburb of Avellaneda , located south of Buenos Aires and strongly influenced by industrialization, is only separated from La Boca by the Riachuelo River . The geographic proximity alone explains the strong dislike of both clubs against the Boca Juniors. Most hateful, however, is the mutual rivalry between the two clubs, Independiente and Racing Club , whose stadiums are only a few hundred meters apart.

The original rivalry has aspects that also shaped those between Arsenal and Tottenham . Because just like the Arsenal, which was looking for a new home and found what it was looking for in the immediate vicinity of the Spurs, in 1907 the CA Independiente, founded only two years earlier in the Argentine capital, entered the area of the Racing Club.

Buenos Aires

The duel between Boca and River is the most important derby in Argentina. After all, according to surveys, around 40% of Argentine football fans are committed to the Boca Juniors and 32% to River Plate. Both associations were once founded in the working-class district of La Boca in the south of Buenos Aires . While the Boca Juniors still reside there, River Plate left the desolate port district in 1925 and moved into a new home in the affluent Nuñez district in the north of the city. Since then, the rivalry has harbored enormous social explosives, as it is considered a class struggle , a conflict between “poor” (Boca) and “rich” (River), in whose vicinity there have already been numerous deaths.

The most traditional derby of Buenos Aires after this super classic is the encounter between San Lorenzo and Huracán , who reside in the neighboring districts of Boedo and Parque Patricios . Boedo, the home of San Lorenzo, is an older and poor district, Parque Patricios is a bit more modern, but also characterized by industrialization, which shows that both clubs are traditionally anchored in the working class . This derby was also accompanied by excesses of violence by the hostile fan camps in recent years.

Cordoba

Córdoba , the second largest city in Argentina, is home to four traditional clubs that have often been represented in the top division of Argentina , although none of the clubs has been able to establish itself as a permanent fixture in the upper house. The most successful and popular clubs in town are Belgrano and Talleres . Their argument is considered the most important city derby. Belgrano was founded in 1905 by a group of young football enthusiasts; Talleres emerged from the railroad milieu in 1913.

La Plata

As early as 1887, the Club de Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata , GELP for short, was founded in the town of La Plata, which had only been founded a few years earlier . As the Spanish name suggests, the club initially focused on gymnastics and fencing. A football department that was established in 1903 had to be closed again in 1905 because the local authorities needed the sports field to build a new school. The club bosses should not have been unhappy about this, as they had no connection to football anyway. As a result, the football-loving young people, most of whom were students, left the club and founded a pure football club with the Club Estudiantes de La Plata . Because football began to develop ever greater popularity among the population, a football department was launched again at GELP in 1912. The players in this team were primarily workers who worked in the meat and canning factories in the industrial suburbs of Berisso and Ensenada. In this way, the former elite club GELP developed into a workers' club, while the academics club Estudiantes has always been a representative of the middle class.

Rosario

Probably the fiercest rivalry in Argentina outside of the greater Buenos Aires area characterizes the derby in Rosario between Rosario Central and the Newell's Old Boys. CA Rosario Central (CARC), which emerged from the railroad milieu in 1889, is a traditional workers' club, whereas CA Newell's Old Boys (NOB), named in 1903 after the English soccer coach Isaac Newell who lived in Rosario, has bourgeois roots. How bitter this rivalry is was demonstrated by the supporters of Rosario Central when they took to the streets after the final of the Copa Libertadores in 1988 and celebrated the defeat of their arch-rival to Nacional Montevideo .
