Fu Jian ( Chinese  符堅  /  苻 坚 , Pinyin Fú Jiān , W.-G. Fu Chien ) (ruled from 357 - 385 ) was a conqueror of Tibetan (proto-Tibetan ethnic group of the Di 氐) or Turkomongol descent.

His grandfather Pu Hong, an officer of the last Hun King Shi Hu (r. 334–349), had set up his own business in 350 Chang'an , Shaanxi Province , when internal conflicts tore the Hun state apart. Pu Hong founded his own dynasty - the Former Qin , even if he stood in the shadow of the neighboring kings of the Mujung- Xianbei .

Fu Jian was a serious friend of Chinese culture, he was considered to be generous and an important promoter of Buddhism . In the years 369/70 he finally eliminated the rule of the Mujung- Xianbei in Luoyang and Shang-te and soon afterwards unified all the “barbarian” states of northern China, including the Tarim Basin . In 383 he attacked the national China of the Eastern Jin Dynasty on the upper reaches of the Huai He River, but suffered a heavy defeat, despite great numerical superiority. Four or five subordinate princes and generals rebelled and dealt the death blow to his empire.

In the following years, the Tabgatsch (also: Northern Wei Dynasty ) under Tuoba Gui (r. 386-409) prevailed as lords of North China.
