Tatsuya Fujiwara ( Japanese 藤原 竜 也 , Fujiwara Tatsuya ; born May 15, 1982 in Chichibu , Saitama , Japan ) is a Japanese actor .

biography

He dropped out of high school. In 1997 he played in the play Shintokumaru , directed by Yukio Ninagawas , which marked the beginning of his acting career. The following year the piece was also performed in London. He later continued to work with Ninagawa at the theater. For example, in 2004 and 2005 he played Romeo in his production of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet , while Anne Suzuki played Juliet .

In July 1997 he starred in the twelve-part television drama Sore ga kotae da! his first television role. Various other television series followed. He made his feature film debut in Persona - The Power Behind the Masks , released in 2000 . In it, Fujiwara played the maker of masks that bullied students put on to emotionally differentiate themselves from others. These masks soon developed into fashion and a mysterious cult.

Fujiwara had his most famous role to date in Kinji Fukasaku's controversially discussed and commercially successful psychological thriller Battle Royale alongside Takeshi Kitano and Aki Maeda . For portraying Shuya Nanahara , he won the Blue Ribbon Award and the Japanese Academy Award for Best Young Actor in 2001 . For the latter award, he was also nominated for Best Actor for both Battle Royale and its sequel .

The actor, who worked with director Takashi Miike on the 2002 television film Sabu , played the samurai Sōji Okita in the 2004 television series Shinsengumi! . In Shusuke Kaneko's film adaptation of the manga series Death Note and its sequel, he played the main role, the youngster Light Yagami , who kills people with the help of a notebook.

Fujiwara played the main character, Light Yagami , in the Death Note film adaptations. Fujiwara said while filming that it was difficult for him to play a character with such low-key emotions. During the filming of Death Note: The Last Name , Tatsuya and Kenichi Matsuyama , who played L, became good friends. Matsuyama mentioned that Tatsuya did a good job.
