Fulko I. (Anjou)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fulk I. (French .: Foulque closely .: Fulk ; † 941 ), called the Red (le Roux), was a Viscount of Angers and Tours , and since 930 the first Count of Anjou . He was a son of Vice Count Ingelger and his wife Adelais.

Fulko was first mentioned in a document in 886 and has been named as Vice Count since 898. He was a vassal of the Robertin family and, as Vice Count of Angers, took on defensive duties against the Bretons bordering on the west . After the ruler of Brittany Alain I the Great died in 907, Fulko took advantage of the anarchy that broke out among the Bretons and took possession of the county of Nantes . In return, he transferred Tours to his colleague from Blois , Theobald the Old , possibly under pressure from his Dux Robert , in order to prevent Fulkos from having too much power. Fulko also lost Nantes in 919 to the Loire-Normans invading Brittany . Despite the loss, Fulko continued the title of count, which was also recognized by his liege lord Hugo the Great in 930 .

Fulko was married to Roscilla, daughter of the lord of the castle Garnier ( Warnerius ) of Loches ( Touraine ), since around 905 . The couple had five children, although the two daughters are only presumed to be parents:
