Fumiko Saiga

Fumiko Saiga ( Japanese 齋 賀 富 美 子 , Saiga Fumiko ; born  November 30, 1943 in Marugame , † April 24, 2009 in The Hague ) was a Japanese diplomat . She was a member of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women from 2001 to 2007 and served as a judge at the International Criminal Court from 2007 until her death .

Life

Fumiko Saiga was born in Marugame in 1943 and graduated from Tokyo University of Foreign Languages in 1966 . She then began a career in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of her home country, where she held various positions in the Contracts Department, in the Department of UN Affairs and in the Department of Economic Affairs. In 1998, she became vice governor of Saitama Prefecture under Governor Yoshihiko Tsuchiya . From September 2003 she was Japan's extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador to Norway and from October of the same year also to Iceland . In December 2005 she also took over the post of ambassador responsible for human rights issues. From 2001 to 2007 she was also a member of the UN Committee for the Elimination of Discrimination against Women .

In December 2007 she was elected judge at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague . She succeeded the French Claude Jorda , who retired from this position in August 2007 for health reasons, and worked in the second pre-trial chamber and the second trial chamber. After serving initially for the remainder of Jorda's tenure, she was re-elected for a regular term in the January 2009 judge elections. Around three months after her election, she died at the age of 65 in The Hague. Kuniko Ozaki was elected as her successor in November 2009 .
