The furrows saxifrage ( Saxifraga exarata ) is a species in the genus saxifrage ( Saxifraga ) in the family Saxifragaceae (Saxifragaceae).

features

The furrow saxifrage is a perennial plant that reaches heights of 3 to 12 centimeters. It grows in dense, soft pads and forms numerous upright, leafy shoots. The rosette leaves are 4 to 15 millimeters long, have dense glands and are variable in shape and size. They are usually oblong-wedge-shaped, have 3 to 7 blunt, spreading sections at the front and appear clearly furrowed due to the more or less protruding leaf veins . The flower stalk is upright, has few leaves, is glandular and has 2 to 10 flowers in an umbellate-like inflorescence. The petals are egg-shaped , milky white to pale yellow or reddish in color, rounded at the front and often overlap at the edges.

Flowering time is from July to August.

The species has chromosome numbers 2n = 20, 24, 26, 48 or 52.

Occurrence

The furrowed saxifrage (in the narrower sense, subsp. Exarata ) occurs in the Alps, on the Balkans, in Asia Minor and in the Caucasus predominantly in alpine crevices and on rubble at altitudes of 1,800 to 3,600 meters. The species is absent in Germany. It is a character species of Androsacetum vandellii from the Androsacion vandellii association, but also occurs in societies of the Caricion curvulae association.

Systematics

Some authors take the furrow saxifrage differently. The subspecies (or varieties):

  • Saxifraga exarata subsp. exarata
  • Saxifraga exarata subsp. leucantha (Thomas) Br.-Bl. (Syn .: Saxifraga exarata var. Leucantha (Thomas) Engl. & Irmsch .; Saxifraga leucantha Thomas ) are added to the furrowed saxifrage . This latter clan only occurs in Switzerland and has the number of chromosomes 2n = approx. 48–52.

In contrast, the following subspecies are often found in Saxifraga moschata :

  • Saxifraga exarata subsp. ampullacea (Ten.) DA Webb ; occurs only in Italy and Slovenia
  • Saxifraga exarata subsp. basaltica (Br.-Bl.) Jalas , occurs only in the Giant Mountains
  • Saxifraga exarata subsp. carniolica (Huter) Jalas , occurs only in Italy and Slovenia and has the chromosome number 2n = 44
  • Saxifraga exarata subsp. delphinensis (Ravaud) Kerguélen , occurs only in France
  • Saxifraga exarata subsp. fastigiata (Luizet) Kerguélen , occurs only in the Pyrenees (Spain and France)
  • Saxifraga exarata subsp. lamottei (Luizet) DA Webb , occurs only in France (Auvergne)
  • Saxifraga exarata subsp. moschata (Wulfen) Cavillier , occurs in the Pyrenees, Alps and Carpathians to the Sudetes, the Apennines, the mountains of the Balkan Peninsula and in the Caucasus.
