Naoya Hatakeyama

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Naoya Hatakeyama ( Japanese 畠 山 直 哉 , Hatakeyama Naoya ; born March 19, 1958 in Rikuzentakata , Iwate Prefecture , Japan ) is a Japanese photographer.

Life

Hatakeyama studied at the Tsukuba University in the Faculty of Art, but switched to photography after taking a photography course with Kiyoji Otsuji. Further studies in art and design followed, which he completed in 1980. In 1984 he finished postgraduate studies at Tsukuba University, Ibaraki. As early as 1983 he had his first solo exhibition in Tokyo, where he has lived since then. In 1996 he took part as a resident artist in the Djerrasi Resident Artists Program in California, USA.

His photos show badly injured landscapes, tattered mountain slopes and endless urban deserts, never people. He doesn't accuse or comment. The origin of his work is probably due to the fact that he moved from his hometown in the rural north of Japan to study in Tokyo. The Japanese capital is crowded and there is no space for nature. At best, green is used as a decorative element, artfully staged by people.

In 1996 Naoya Hatakeyama was awarded the Kimura Ihei Shashin-shō ( 木村 伊 兵衛 写真 賞 , Eng. "Kimura-Ihei Photography Prize", Eng. Kimura Ihei Memorial Award of Photography), the most important recognition for artistic photography in Japan.

In Germany, Hatakeyama photographed the demolition of the Westfalen I / II mine in 2003. Pictures of it and more can be found via the web link below to the LA gallery.
