Piotr Czerwinski (born November 30, 1985 in Toronto , Canada ), better known by his fighting name Furious Pete , is a Canadian competitive eater , web video producer and bodybuilder of Polish descent. He holds several world records in fast food. He runs a popular YouTube channel and has been appearing on German television at irregular intervals since 2011.
Life
Personal
Czerwinski was born in 1985 to Polish immigrants in Toronto . As a teenager, he was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa , after which he had to spend six weeks in a clinic in 2002. At a height of 188 centimeters, he weighed only 54 kilograms. In the course of his rehabilitation he developed an interest in bodybuilding and graduated with an M.Eng .
Competition meal
Pete came up with the idea of fast food by chance when one of his friends challenged him to break a local record in 2007. Pete was even able to double the record and subsequently tried his hand at other restaurant challenges. In response to the newly discovered talent, he founded a YouTube channel that now has around 5.2 million subscribers. In his first world record in 2008, he ate a two-kilo steak in less than seven minutes. An organization noticed him that invited him to an America-wide college competition in San Diego , where he made his breakthrough as a competitive eater with strong performances.
In March 2012, Furious Pete caught on when he stood on the jury for Canada's Got Talent . In 51 seconds, he devoured five hard-boiled eggs, three slices of Canadian ham, two bananas, and a carton of milk and ended the show with a burp . For this performance he received three no . In the years that followed, he set up some strange world records, including the minute record in a hamburger meal (four pieces) and the fastest consumption of a raw onion (43.53 seconds). His largest daily calorie intake was 25,000 and came about as part of a meatball competition . A barium test showed that his stomach can expand further than usual and digested more slowly. In addition, it has no gag reflex , which makes swallowing large amounts much easier. Pete does most of his record attempts without drinking, which makes the food hard to break down and swallow as the oral cavity becomes drier over time.
On a total of three YouTube channels, Pete deals with fitness and bodybuilding as well as gaming and gives Polish lessons in addition to food. In addition, he has been on the German private broadcaster Kabel eins since 2011 , where he visits different countries in a section of the adventure life magazine and takes care of the local food culture in his typical way - including fast food .
Cancer
In October 2014, Pete announced that he had testicular cancer via YouTube video . He underwent surgery and defeated cancer. He fell ill again in mid-2015 and began radiation therapy , of which he regularly posted photos. On November 25, 2015, he announced that he was again cancer-free. At the beginning of February 2017, cancer cells were found in his body again.
controversy
In 2014, Czerwinski's cancer diagnosis caused criticism of his diet. In particular, his high meat consumption caused severe headwinds on social media . He received numerous letters and e-mails from vegans attesting to a connection between his illness and his eating habits. On April 5, 2015, bodybuilder and vlogger Richard Burgess (Vegan Gains) added fuel to the fire by personally attacking Pete in a video (Furious Pete: Worst of the Fitness Industry) and criticizing his non-vegan lifestyle. Pete didn't react at first, but after his fans became aware of the channel, he said that his illness was being used as a means to an end for the vegan agenda. A real-life showdown of the two at a fitness expo in Toronto, which was hoped for by followers , did not materialize. In another video, Burgess insulted Pete again after his cancer came back. The Canadian continued to ignore his attacker, but after his renewed recovery made a statement in January 2016 that he vented his displeasure. In it, he expressed himself angry about the vegan scene and allowed himself to be carried away to a controversial comparison.
“Vegans are so damn aggressive in trying to influence others that are not vegans to become vegans […] And if you say no to them, they wish death upon you […] I hate to make this comparison, but it's in the news all the time, and veganism is almost like ISIS lately. "
"Vegans are so damn aggressive about getting other non-vegans to become vegans [...] and if you say no to them, they wish you death [...] I hate to make that comparison, but it is on the news all the time, and veganism is pretty much like ISIS lately. "
Pete rowed back after being accused of being on par with his opponent. As a result, he no longer spoke up in the feud. When he announced his illness, he had already confirmed that he wanted to continue his life as usual (“I'm going to continue living my life the way I've been living it”).
