International driving licence

The international driving license (also: interstate driving license ) is a temporary and globally valid supplementary document to the national driving license, but it is rarely required. The document contains all data of the normal driver's license in different languages ​​and is only valid in combination with this.

Within the European Union as well as in the EFTA countries Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland, the national driving license is still sufficient. It is also possible to drive a vehicle in the popular tourist destinations Canada, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia with the national document; it is not mandatory to have an international driver's license with you. An English-language driver's license is required in Australia and New Zealand, but a translation of the national driver's license is sufficient. In some states of the USA the international driver's license has been required since the beginning of 2009; Carrying the “International Driving License according to the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic of 1968 ” is recommended here, although it is not officially recognized in the USA. Austria issues the "International Driving License according to the Geneva Convention on Motor Vehicle Traffic of 1949 ", which the USA officially recognizes. However, Switzerland does not issue any other international driving license. Germany, however, still issues the international driving license according to the Paris Agreement on Motor Vehicle Traffic of April 24, 1926 , which z. B. is recognized in Thailand.
