Gábor from Kazinczy

Gábor von Kazinczy (born January 19, 1889 in Szeged , † May 23, 1964 in Motala , Sweden ) was a Hungarian civil engineer.

Kazinczy came from a family of intellectuals; his grandfather was Ferenc Kazinczy . Kazinczy finished his civil engineering studies in 1911 at the TH Budapest, was at the state materials testing laboratory and later deputy head of the municipal construction department of Budapest. In 1943 he became a senior consulting engineer. In 1931 he received his doctorate at the TH Budapest and in 1939 he completed his habilitation. After the Second World War he went into exile with his family in Denmark, where he worked for the Swedish company Kooperativa Forbundets Arkitektkontor from 1947 until his retirement in 1959, designing and calculating special constructions (grain silos, large-span bowls, pre-tensioned suspended ceilings, etc.).

With a paper from 1914, he is considered to be the founder of the ultimate load method (ultimate load limit method). At that time, stress tests were carried out for a house which Kazinczy could no longer interpret with elastic theory, but only with plastic deformation. He introduced the concept of plastic hinges. The theory was not expanded until the 1920s and 1930s, and was partly still influenced by Kazinczy (for example in exchange with Hermann Maier-Leibnitz , who published similar concepts in his studies on stress tests in 1928/29). In 1933 he published load tests on reinforced concrete beams, to which he also applied the ultimate load theory.
