Hermann Maier-Leibnitz

Hermann Maier-Leibnitz (born June 18, 1885 in Schorndorf as Hermann Maier; † August 11, 1962 in Stuttgart ) was a German professor of iron and industrial construction.

Life

Hermann Maier was the son of a town architect and a brother of Reinhold Maier . During his studies, he became a member of the fraternity Academic Society Sonderbund Stuttgart . Among other things, he studied with Emil Mörsch . Soon after his marriage to Marianne Leibnitz, he changed his last name to Maier-Leibnitz. At about the same time, he also changed jobs. If he had previously been employed by the Württemberg State Railways, he now worked at the Esslingen machine factory , where he received power of attorney in 1914 . In 1917 he received his doctorate in Stuttgart. Two years later, at the age of only 34, he became professor for statics of iron and industrial construction at the Technical University of Stuttgart .

In 1937, Hermann Maier-Leibnitz was excluded from the Reichsfachschaft for experts. During the period of reconstruction, he wrote a three-volume work on structural engineering, which was at times considered the standard work on structural engineering in the Federal Republic of Germany. He is considered to be one of the founders of the load bearing method , where he worked together with Gábor von Kazinczy . Another pioneer in this field was John Baker .

The marriage to Marianne Leibnitz had three children, the son Heinz (* 1911; † 2000) and the daughters Susanne (* 1913) and Magdalene (* 1916; † 1941) . The family lived first at Marktplatz 25 , then at Burgsteige 1 in Kaisheimer Pflegehof and later at Deffnerstraße 5 in Esslingen; In addition, Hermann Maier-Leibnitz and his brother Reinhold owned a holiday home in Arosa , where fellow scientists such as Niels Bohr , James Franck and Richard Courant often visited.
