The gardener Pötschke GmbH is since 1912 existing company for garden products . It is the fifth oldest mail order company in Germany. With a circulation of more than 1.3 million, Gärtner Pötschke's Large Garden Book is the best-selling German-language garden book.

history

In 1912 Harry Pötschke ( April 21, 1884 - May 18, 1970 ) founded the Gärtner Pötschke company in Mörsdorf , Thuringia , which moved to Arnstadt in 1934. The core business was initially limited to the sale of seeds. After the company headquarters in Arnstadt was destroyed in an air raid on February 6, 1945, the company was rebuilt on Büttgener Straße in Kaarst in 1949. From 1960 to 1982 the son of the company founder Werner Pötschke (born August 19, 1910 - 1999) ran the business. Today Cornelia Pötschke-Kirchhartz, Werner Pötschke's daughter, runs the company in the third generation.

The names of the varieties of our own plant breeds (Aster novae-angliae "In memory of Alma Pötschke " (1969), Rose " Opa Pötschke " and Rose " Cornelia Pötschke " ...) are reminiscent of the long family tradition.

The company in Kaarst employs around 300 people.

On April 1, 2019, the company filed for insolvency proceedings under self-administration , at the beginning of August it was announced that the Weltbild Group had taken over Pötschke. The location in Kaarst as well as the name and logo should be retained. In addition, around 150 people will continue to be employed. The Federal Cartel Office has not yet approved the takeover (as of August 2019).

Products

The range has been expanded over the years and the original core business of seeds has been expanded.

The mail order business originally developed from the gardener Pötschke's garden book , which appeared from 1936 and was a catalog and gardening guide in one. Gärtner Pötschke's settler book was published for the first time in 1941 and was no longer a catalog. From 1964, his successor was the gardener Pötschke's Large Garden Book . Catalogs appeared separately. The company also publishes the Der Grüne Wink calendar and Gärtner Pötschke's practical gardening guide . The Green Wink is a tear-off calendar for 365 days a year, gardener Pötschke appears as a cartoon every day, gives current gardening tips, his wife and grandchildren also appear. The style is characterized by the three colors black, green and red. The comic-like characters have existed in this form since 1939, and poems about the current tip that Werner Pötschke originally wrote himself are also typical.
