Gérard Blitz (water sports enthusiast)
Gérard Blitz (born August 1, 1901 in Amsterdam , † March 8, 1979 in Ganshoren ) was a Belgian swimmer and water polo player . In 1920, at the age of 19, he took part in the Summer Olympics in Antwerp and won the bronze medal over 100 meters back and silver in water polo as a member of the Belgian team.
Between 1921 and 1927 Blitz held the world record for the 400 meter backstroke with a time of 5: 59.2. In 1924, Blitz won another silver medal with the water polo team at the Summer Olympics in Paris and another bronze medal at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin . In the latter games, he was one of 13 Jewish athletes to win a medal.
Gérard Blitz was the younger brother of water polo player Maurice Blitz and the uncle of the entrepreneur Gérard Blitz , who founded Club Med in 1950 .
