Géza Ottlik

Géza Ottlik (born May 9, 1912 in Budapest ; † October 9, 1990 there ) was a Hungarian writer , translator , mathematician and bridge theorist. He is considered to be an outstanding figure on the Hungarian intellectual scene.

Géza Ottlik attended the military schools in Kőszeg and Budapest and studied mathematics and physics in Budapest. During World War II , he hid a Jewish friend from persecution by the fascists. For this he was honored as Righteous Among the Nations .

He translated u. a. Works by George Bernard Shaw , Evelyn Waugh , Thomas Mann and Stefan Zweig into Hungarian and has written several bridge books.

His most famous novel is called The School on the Border and was published in 1959. In 1963 it was published in German as a translation by Charlotte Ujlaky and in 2009 with an afterword by Péter Esterházy .
