history

Image of grace of the Gönningerkapelle

The Bamberg citizen Johann Jakob Gönninger had the chapel built in honor of Our Lady Mary in the years 1761–1768 after a pilgrimage to Einsiedeln , from which he brought a replica of the miraculous image. The copy of the miraculous image acquired in Einsiedeln was placed in the high altar. In the middle of the 19th century, the chapel was given new fittings, losing the original furnishings; the miraculous image is still in the high altar. At the time of its construction, its location marked the entrance to the Bamberg main cemetery, which was still festive at the time. With the gradual expansion of the cemetery to the north and the opening of the new funeral hall in 1966, the chapel moved to the edge. The original forecourt is now being used as a parking zone and its condition is in need of renovation.

In the roof turret hangs a small bell with a striking note a 2 . It was cast by Joachim Keller in 1769. The previously torn ringing rope was renewed in 2016 for the reading A schöna Leich . At the beginning of the 20th century, tombstones of important Bamberg personalities were moved into the chapel. It is subordinate to the parish church of St. Gangolf .
