Götz Bellmann (born November 15, 1957 in Lippstadt ) is a German architect and designer.

Career

Bellmann grew up in Berlin and attended the Käthe-Kollwitz-Oberschule there. From 1979 to 1984 he studied at the University of Architecture and Construction in Weimar (today Bauhaus University Weimar ) and obtained a diploma at the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Development under Dieter Salzmann and Joachim Stahr. 1984–1990 followed a traineeship and work as a research assistant at the Bauakademie Berlin , where he received his doctorate in 1990.

The building ensemble from the New Hackescher Markt surrounds the northeast side of the Hackescher Markt.

In 1989 he received approval as a freelance furniture designer from the Association of Visual Artists, Berlin. After the fall of the Berlin Wall at the end of 1989, Götz Bellmann was one of the co-founders of Archivolte, the first independent architecture magazine in the GDR, and the East-West planning group Hundekopf , which, among other things, designed concepts for the development of the Spree region in the Berlin Galerie Aedes were shown.

Bellmann has been working as a freelance architect in Berlin since 1990. In 1991, together with Walter Böhm, he founded Bellmann & Böhm - Architekten, Berlin, which existed until 2007. One of the most famous projects of the office is the Neue Hackesche Markt (formerly Neue Hackesche Höfe) on the northeast side of the Hackescher Markt in Berlin-Mitte. The architectural duo won the urban planning competition in 1993 for the redesign of the post-war wasteland. A courtyard ensemble consisting of twelve different buildings was created, which re-frames the north-eastern edge of the square based on the historical structure. In order to achieve architectural diversity for the individual houses, Götz Bellmann and Walter Böhm involved three other architects with the design of three of the nine street-side buildings.

From 1992 until his death in 1997, the office worked with the architect and designer Aldo Rossi , Milan (1931–1997), who became a mentor for the young architects. Together with him, they realized the Schützenstrasse district .

In 2007 Götz Bellmann founded the Bellmann Architects office in Berlin. The main focus of his work is careful urban repairs and the interplay of historical and new buildings. It includes the detailed restoration of monuments, such as the baroque town house at Charlottenstrasse 100 in Potsdam, and the integration of new buildings into a grown environment, such as the Manufactory of Dreams in Annaberg-Buchholz, a museum for Ore Mountain folk art, in which the collection of Erika Pohl-Ströher is on display. The museum consists of a building from the late Renaissance and a new part, the design of which is based on the historical buildings in the area.

In addition to his work as an architect, Götz Bellmann designs lights, furniture and other accessories. Together with his daughter, the product designer Frieda Bellmann, he designed a modern version of the Berlin Christmas pyramid in 2017. In 2018, they received the German Design Award in the Home Textiles and Home Accessories category for the product .
