Günter Auerswald

Günter Auerswald (born June 27, 1936 in Chemnitz ) is a former cyclist from the GDR .

Athletic career

At the age of 16, Auerswald began his career in the youth department of BSG Motor Diamant Karl-Marx-Stadt . By 1954 he had won three GDR youth championship titles in team driving on the track and on the road. In 1957 he was GDR junior runner-up in the 4,000 m team pursuit with the SC Motor Karl-Marx-Stadt .

From 1958 onwards Auerswald mainly drove standing races . He contested a total of 191 races on the tracks of the GDR, of which he won 49, took 29 second and 28 third places. He also drove some competitions in the ČSSR and took part in the 1965 World Track Championships in San Sebastian , where he was eliminated from the repechage. Auerswald drove the most successful time of his career behind pacemaker Erich Krüger from Halle (Saale) (1961 to 1966). Other pacemakers were Kurt Lippmanns, Fritz Erdenberger and Heinz Stöber .

Auerswald won a total of four silver medals at GDR championships (1962 to 1965). In 1959, 1963 and 1965 he led the table of the annual best list.

At the end of 1966, Auerswald ended his active career.

Professional

Auerswald completed an apprenticeship as a telecommunications engineer. He later worked as a trainer in the cycling section of SC Karl-Marx-Stadt.
