Günter Bemmann

Günter Bemmann (born December 15, 1927 in Verden (Aller) ; † March 16, 2018 ) was a German law scholar and university professor .

Life

After Bemmann was drafted as a flak helper in 1943, he graduated from high school in 1947. He then completed an apprenticeship in banking and began studying law at the University of Göttingen in 1950 . In 1953 he passed his first state examination in law in Göttingen, and later also the second. In 1955, under the supervision of Paul Bockelmann , Bemmann obtained his doctorate with a thesis on the objective condition of criminal liability for a Dr. iur. In 1959 Bemmann his teacher Bockelmann at the University of Heidelberg , where he met with a thesis on 1965 broke the law habilitation was and Venia legendi for the subjects received criminal law and criminal procedure law.

This was followed by substitute professorships at the Universities of Saarbrücken , Munich and Cologne before he was appointed full professor at the newly founded University of Augsburg in 1971 to a chair in criminal law. Soon after, he was dean of the Augsburg Faculty of Law. In 1978 he was also one of the first professors to move to the newly founded Open University in Hagen to the chair for criminal law, criminal procedure law and penal law. There he taught and researched until his retirement in 1993.

Bemmann was very involved in the scientific exchange between German and Greek legal scholars and was, among other things, a co-initiator of the German-Greek criminal law symposia. In 1980, the University of Thessaloniki awarded him an honorary doctorate for his services . After the German reunification , Bemmann also devoted himself to legal training in the new federal states. He was a member of the council for the reopening of legal teaching and research at the University of Rostock and the founding committee of the law faculty of the University of Rostock and was a visiting professor in Rostock for several years. For this and for his criminal work, the law faculty of the university also awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1997.
