Soccer player

Hoffmann began playing soccer in the youth division of SG Diemitz and the company sports association Empor Halle . After finishing school, he completed an apprenticeship as a bricklayer and then trained as a technical draftsman. In 1954 he moved to the Halle top club SC Chemie Halle-Leuna , where he played for a year in the reserve team. Between 1955 and 1958 Hoffmann played with the university club SC Wissenschaft Halle in the second-rate GDR league . In the summer of 1958, the soccer section of SC Wissenschaft was transferred to the newly founded SC Chemie Halle. In this way, only 1.65 m wide Hoffmann came in the fall of 1958 to his first appearances in the GDR Serie A, but had to end of the season in the second-class I. DDR-Liga descend. After the immediate resurgence, Hoffmann initially played four more seasons in the major league with the Halle club. Usually he was used as a midfielder. Hoffmann celebrated his greatest success on June 10, 1962, when he was in the final of the GDR soccer cup with SC Chemie Halle. As a left midfielder, he experienced the 3-1 victory over SC Dynamo Berlin, with which Hoffmann won his only title.

Until 1964, Hoffmann was a regular at SC Chemie. At the end of the 1963/64 season, the Halle residents were relegated from the league, and Hoffmann had to play in the second division for a year. However, the team managed to get back up immediately, but Hoffmann already had to pay tribute to his 31 years. In the new league season, in which the football section of SC Chemie became Hallesche FC Chemie, he was only used in 13 point games. In the two seasons 1966/67 and 1967/68 Hoffmann played only four times in the first team. His last league game took place on December 16, 1967. In the match of the 12th matchday Lok Stendal - HFC (2-0) Hoffmann was called up again in midfield. From 1958 to 1967 he played 133 league games and scored nine goals. He was also used in the two European Cup games in 1962 against OFK Belgrade (0: 2, 3: 3).

coach

Immediately after the end of his career as a football player, Hoffmann, who had obtained his physical education teacher diploma from Halle's Martin Luther University , became the coach of the 4th team at the HFC Chemistry. Later he moved up as a coach in the 3rd and 2nd teams. In 1970 he was taken over to the coaching staff of the league team and was appointed head coach at the beginning of the 1973/74 season after the HFC had again been relegated from the league. Even under coach Hoffmann, the immediate return to the league succeeded. Although Hoffmann managed to stay out of the league for two years, he was replaced by Peter Kohl in November 1976 . Hoffmann continued to work for the club and in 1986 he worked again for a few months as interim coach of the first team.
