Günter Schmidt (born June 19, 1952 ) is a former German soccer player. For the BSG Wismut Gera he played in the 1970s in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football .

Athletic career

In the 1971/72 season, 19-year-old Günter Schmidt made his debut in the GDR's national soccer game . For the Leipziger Betriebsportgemeinschaft (BSG) Lokomotive Ost , he played eight of the 22 point games. At the end of the season, the BSG rose again to the district league after only one year in the GDR league . In May 1973 Schmidt became a soldier in the National People's Army , but was able to continue playing football in the GDR league with the Army Sports Association (ASG) Vorwärts Leipzig . The ASG had just become league relay winner and participated in the promotion round to the league. The newcomer Schmidt was immediately used in six of the eight qualifying games, scored three goals, but the army footballers missed promotion. Schmidt continued to play for Vorwärts Leipzig in the GDR league until October 1977. He was always a regular player and was the top scorer in Leipzig in 1974, 1975 and 1976. These reached the league promotion round again in 1976, but failed again. Schmidt played four promotion games this time and scored two goals. By his discharge from the army, he had been used in 87 league games and ten promotion games and had a total of 32 goals.

From November 1977 Günter played for the upper division BSG Wismut Gera . There he played 14 point games by the end of the season, in which he was used both in attack and in midfield. However, he was only in the starting line-up nine times and didn't score any goals. As a newcomer to the league, the Geraers could not hold the class, and so Günter found himself in the GDR league afterwards. There he fought his way back to a regular place, was again top scorer in 1979 with twelve goals and reached with the bismuth team in 1980 and 1983 again, albeit unsuccessfully, the league promotion round. In 1983/84 Günter played his last season in higher-class football. He went into this season at the age of 31, for which he had been selected as team captain, but only made nine league appearances and scored only one goal. During the season he was eliminated from the BSG Wismut squad. Within thirteen seasons, Günter Schmidt had played 14 league games (without a goal), 202 GDR league games (50 goals) and 24 promotion games (5 goals).
