Günther Hoff

Günther Hoff (* 1928 in Gernrode ) is a German church music director and choir director.

Life

Hoff studied church music in Halle (Saale) and then worked as a cantor in Gernrode. He made the local collegiate church of St. Cyriakus a well-known center of church music. He then worked as a cathedral organist at Magdeburg Cathedral for over 25 years . At the same time he was also director of the cathedral choir, which he led to a national reputation. He held Bach days several times.

In 1993 he took over the direction of the newly founded choir of the University of Magdeburg , with which he performed in several German cities and Israel . After the reopening of the Magdeburg Johanniskirche , the series of university concerts were established, which Hoff and the choir brought to life. He also directed the university's academic orchestra and the Magdeburg wind choir. Hoff had a lectureship in conducting at the University's Institute for Music. He also gave concerts with various chamber music ensembles.

Award

In 1999 he was awarded the Medal of Merit of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany by Federal President Roman Herzog and in 2001 with the Otto von Guericke Medal from the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. In 1993 and 2017 he was allowed to enter himself in the Golden Book of the city of Magdeburg .
