Günther Leibfried (born June 1, 1915 in Fraulautern near Saarlouis , † June 20, 1977 in Aachen ) was a German physicist . The focus of his research was on the theory of condensed matter .

Life

Leibfried received his doctorate in physics in 1939 under Georg Joos at the University of Göttingen (about the Raman effect on alum and sugar crystals), was then assistant to Richard Becker in Göttingen and completed his habilitation there in 1950. From 1957 to 1977, as director of the institute at Forschungszentrum Jülich , he researched in particular Effects of radiation on metal grids and crystals . At the same time he held a professorship for theoretical physics at the RWTH Aachen .

From 1990 to 2008, Forschungszentrum Jülich awarded the Günther Leibfried Prize to outstanding doctoral students at the research center . The prize was replaced by the Excellence Prize in 2009 . He was editor of the Zeitschrift für Physik .

Leibfried has been a member of the Lunaburgia Association since he was a student in Göttingen .
