The GEFO Society for Oeltransporte mbH (GEFO) is a maritime and inland tanker shipping company and a trading company with headquarters in Hamburg .

history

GEFO was founded in 1961 by Theodor Weisser as a house shipping company for the oil trading group Marquard & Bahls . In its first decade of operation, the company used 10 to 12 tankers of the Gustav Königs type (built in the GDR ), each with a load capacity of up to 1,200 tonnes, to transport mineral oil products - heating oil and gasoline - on the Rhine .

In the 1970s Ulf Loose took over the management and all shares of GEFO, which from then on was expanded into a transporter for oil and chemical companies. Loose comes from a shipping family in Flensburg and is a banker and business economist.

The GEFO fleet today comprises 148 special tankers, including 12 newbuildings, which will be delivered in the years 2019-2022 by shipyards in China (eight sea tankers, two stainless steel inland tankers) and shipyards in Romania / Holland (two gas tankers). Half of the GEFO fleet is owned by the company, the other half is chartered.

The fleet is divided into 27 sea tankers ranging in size from 3000 tdw to 7500 tdw, mostly with stainless steel tanks for chemical voyages in the North Sea , Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean . 46 chemical inland tankers, also with stainless steel and coated tanks with 1500 to 4000 tons loading capacity, which are used by the subsidiary UNITAS NV in Antwerp , operate in the ARA area (Antwerp- Rotterdam - Amsterdam ) and on the Rhine.

In the 2000s, GEFO gradually built up a gas tanker fleet of 19 ships, each with six to eight cylindrical pressure tanks (up to 17 bar ) and a volume per ship between 2000 and 3000 m³. The gas tankers are also used in ARA and on the Rhine. In this segment, GEFO has a market share of 35% with the gas tanker fleet. 56 mineral oil tankers on the Rhine, each with between 1500 tons and 4000 tons of loading capacity, complete the GEFO fleet.

In addition to economic and social aspects, GEFO focuses on ecological acceptance. All tankers are double-hulled, more aerodynamic underwater hull shapes to save fuel and reduce emissions , scrubber technology and the option of converting new ships to LNG propulsion have found their way into the GEFO fleet.

In addition to the four shipping fleets, GEFO operates global bunker trading in Hamburg, Rotterdam, Antwerp, Singapore , South Africa or on the east and west coast of the USA . Around 40% of the GEFO Group's sales of 470.0 million euros in 2018 result from the trading business.

GEFO subsidiaries and branches are located in Antwerp, Rotterdam, Luxembourg and Duisburg . The CEO is Sven Schwarz (banker and business economist). The owner is Ulf Loose. With its tonnage of 406,825 tdw in total, GEFO transports around 18.0 million tons of liquid dangerous goods annually.
