Tiagabine (trade name Gabitril ® ) is an antispasmodic drug that is used to treat epilepsy . Chemically, it is a derivative of nipecotic acid .
Mechanism of action
Tiagabine blocks the reuptake of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in nerve cells. This increases its arousal-inhibiting function.
application areas
Tiagabine is used exclusively as add-on therapy for epilepsy with focal and secondary generalized seizures.
Side effects
Depending on the dose, dizziness, tiredness up to drowsiness, headache, tremors, balance disorders, concentration difficulties, mental slowness and nausea occur. Irrespective of the dose, allergic side effects rarely occur with tiagabine. With chronic use, however, in individual cases it can cause what is known as a non-convulsive status epilepticus, a series of small seizures with impaired consciousness without motor expressions.
marketing
Sales in Germany ceased in November 2013. The provider Teva Pharmaceutical Industries gave economic reasons for this.
