Gabriel-Mathieu de Clieu (also Gabriel d'Erchigny de Clieu ; * 1687 ; † November 29, 1774 ) was a French naval officer, royal lieutenant and governor of Guadeloupe .

Act

In 1723 he succeeded in bringing a coffee tree from the Jardin des Plantes in Paris to the island of Martinique , thereby laying the foundation for coffee cultivation in the French colonies . During the crossing he shared his drinking water ration with the plant. The first harvest was possible in 1726. He arrived in Guadeloupe on August 17, 1737, coming from France.
