Gabriel Figueroa

Gabriel Figueroa (born April 24, 1907 in Mexico City , † April 27, 1997 there ) was a Mexican cameraman .

Life

Gabriel Figueroa came to film as a still photographer in the early 1930s, soon afterwards became a cameraman and worked for some time as assistant to cameraman Gregg Toland in the USA. After returning to his homeland, Figueroa became head cameraman and photographed numerous films by the most famous Mexican directors of the time, Luis Buñuel and Emilio Fernández . In addition, he also worked on numerous second-rate melodramas, adventure films and westerns. Figueroa was valued above all for his landscape photographs and depictions of faces.

In 1949 he won a Golden Globe Award for the film Mexican Romance . He was nominated for an Oscar in 1965 for his work on The Night of the Iguana . In the course of his career, he was awarded a Premio Ariel nine times . In 1987 Figueroa received the Mexican Ariel de Oro Film Award for his life's work.

In 1995 Figueroa was honored with the International Achievement Award from the American Society of Cinematographers .
