Gabriel Lowenstein

Gabriel Löwenstein (born November 7, 1825 in Fürth , † January 17, 1911 in Nuremberg ) was a social democratic politician.

Löwenstein came from a Jewish family and learned the weaving trade . During the revolution of 1848/49 he took an active part in the democratic movement in Fürth. In the 1860s and 1870s Löwenstein owned a braid factory .

He had been a member of the workers' association in Fürth since 1863. In 1868 Löwenstein was elected second chairman of the Association of German Workers' Associations. In the same year he was a co-founder of the Fürther Bürgerbund. In 1869 he was a co-founder of the SDAP as a participant in the Eisenach party congress . In Fürth Löwenstein was a member of the community college between 1869 and 1871 and a magistrate from 1872 to 1878.

Löwenstein is considered to be the founder of the social democratic press in Franconia . In 1871 he co-founded the Fürth democratic weekly paper. He gave up his company and has only worked for the party ever since. Between 1885 and 1907 he was the editor of the Franconian Daily Mail in Nuremberg.

Until the beginning of the 20th century, Löwenstein was a participant in almost all party congresses of the SPD. In the course of the Socialist Law , he was sentenced to several months in prison. After serving them, he emigrated to the USA for a short time in 1880 . Between 1893 and 1905 Löwenstein was a member of the Second Chamber of the Bavarian State Parliament .
