Gabriela Antunes was born on July 8, 1937 in the city of Nova Lisboa - today Huambo - formerly part of the Portuguese colony of Angola. After completing school, she completed a degree in German at the University of Lisbon until December 1961. During this time, she also stayed in the Casa dos Estudantes do Império , a student house in which mainly lusophone students from the African colonies gathered and which served as the nucleus of the Luso-African liberation movements.

Antunes later returned to Angola, where she initially taught English at the Escola Comercial e Industrial Sarmento Rodrigues in her home town of Nova Lisboa. In 1973/74 Antunes completed a post-doctoral degree in pedagogy and didactics of the English languages.

Professional background

After Angola gained independence in 1975, Antunes worked primarily as a teacher for Portuguese, English and German at various schools in Luanda, including the Escola Vicente Ferreira (later Escola 1º de Maio ), the Instituto Comercial de Luanda and the Colégio Vasco da Gama .

In 1980 the Angolan state transferred Antunes to the Ministry of Education in the State Secretariat for Culture in order to produce children's books in a small group with other authors on behalf of the state and to design the children's page of the state newspaper Jornal de Angola . As part of this activity, Antunes published her first children's book together with Rosalina Pombal in 1982 with the title A águia, a rola, a galinha e os 50 lweis (in German: "The eagle, the turtle dove, the hen and the 50 Lweis "). She also published other books: A Abelha eo Pássaro (German: Die Biene und der Vogel; 1982), Luhuna o Menino que Não Conhecia Flor-viva (German: Luhana, the boy who did not know Flor-Viva; 1983), Kibala o rei Leão (German: Kiberal and the Lion King; 1983), O Castigo do Dragão Glutão (German: Die Strafe des Drachen Glutão; 1983).

As early as 1983, the Ministry of Education and Culture nominated her to head the Angolan National Library . At the same time she began to supervise a journalism course at the Makarenko Institute (later Instituto Médio de Economia de Luanda) and to give seminars in Angolan art and literature. In 1984 the Angolan Writers' Union ( União dos Escritores Angolanos ) took on Antunes. Later she lectured at the private Instituto Superior Privado de Angola (ISPRA).
